ISSUE 19 | DREAMBOATS w/ Umbrage Gallery

Picture 2

Dear all,

This week we welcome back Ashley Singley as our guest curator.

Ashley selected a series of photographs by Dreamboats Collective, a new agency featuring four young photographers: Adam Golfer, Joe Leavenworth, TJ Proechel, and Daniel Shea. Unlike our previous shows, this one can be experienced both online and in person (if you happen to be in New York City). The exhibition will be on view from November 5th through December 22nd, Monday through Saturday 11–6 pm, at Umbrage Editions gallery in Dumbo, Brooklyn. As a special holiday feature, each artist will make available a limited edition 8”x10” and 11”x14” affordable print series (ranging from $35 to $200) for sale at the gallery.
About the show:

As a group, Dreamboats adds to the growing disambiguation between working personally and working editorially. Membersof the collective, who met at Maryland Institute College of Art, are primarily engaged in contemporary fine art and social documentary practices, but their professed intention is to circumvent the traditional photographic establishment to create a self-sustaining network of distribution and support for the creation of new photographic works. The works selected for the exhibition are from each artist’s recent body of work:

Adam Golfer’s series, Kin*,

Joe Leavenworth’s Pictures from Home,

TJ Proechel’s Dream House, and

Daniel Shea’s Untitled (Baltimore).

WEEK 4 | SRI LANKA PART 1

WEEK 004 | SRI LANKA PT. 1

Welcome to Week 4!

This week we continue with theme-based showcases on www.nocommercialvalue.org

In response to the recent crisis and intensified fighting in Sri Lanka, we decided to put some spotlight on the issue. One of the editors of this site, Prem Sooriyakumar, has been working on a longer series on Sri Lanka that explores personal memories and the country’s turbulent history. We thought this would be a good moment to present his mutlimedia journey and introduce a location-based showcase (more places to come).

Week 2 | Jonas Bendiksen, Klimek, Kara Blake & Nicole Lizée…

week 2

Dear Friends,

We are happy to announce that our first week launch of
www.nocommericalvalue.org was received extremely well.
There was traffic from  all around the world, from Japan to Australia,
to Europe to North America. We got a lot of encouraging emails from
a lot of you.  Thank you for your support. It is great to know that there are some very dedicated early adopters.

For our Week 002 launch we have a great diversity of expression from
music to docs.  We are also featuring a last minute link as a response
to Slumdog Millionaire’s sweeping victory at the Oscars.  It made us
think that we need a reality check on slums. We discovered an interesting interactive documentary by photographer Jonas Bendiksen of Magnum
photos. This multimedia photo essay highlights not only Mumbai’s slums, but also others around the world.  So, here is what we got:

Welcome to NoCommercialValue.org!

NoCommercialValue
Dear friends, family and colleagues,

we are very happy to inform you that www.nocommercialvalue.org is now open!
It is an experiment in curatorial approaches and merging of traditional mediums such as galleries, television and social media sites.

The idea emerged out of a discussion on a cold winter night in Montreal. As both makers and consumers of media, we felt frustrated that much of what we see and create is destined to be forgotten on our shelves and hard drives. In an attempt to address that problem, we decided to create a web platform for the out-of-spotlight media that can challenge, entertain, provoke, and inform. Furthermore, we see nocommercialvalue.org as a showcase for artists, journalists, activists, photographers, social scientists, writers, filmmakers and musicians who want to share their creative perspective on the world we live in.

Please subscribe now for updates and return to this blog for information about the upcoming issues.

Thank you,

Amir Husak
